?Lovers 365 Days A Year!?
It’s said that Valentine’s Day is for lovers. Well, lovers are people that care about others and demonstrate kindness. Lovers are always looking to see the good; appreciating things that are and things that are done as much as appreciating people themselves. Right? Oh, you don’t think that’s what was meant! You think it’s more like, you know, falling in love and knowing someone cares enough to spend time with you, to get to know you and to be intimate and stuff. I think you’re right, but as a Christian we tend think a little differently. We think, “how does all this line up with God’s Word?”
Even in this brief paragraph we can see an illustration of human love (eros & phileo) and of God’s love (agape). God is Love (1John 4:8b). He doesn’t have to develop love as He Is Love. He is Eternal meaning He was, and is and ever shall be. Likewise is everything about Him. The Eternal One is Love, Life, Light, and Truth. There are many, many scriptures in the Bible that illustrate this, of which I’ll use a few. Let’s begin with one we are pretty familiar with…John 3:16….”For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have Everlasting Life.” When the fall of mankind via Adam & Eve in the Garden (Genesis 2 & 3) happened, God, our Heavenly Father declared then that one day the seed of woman would crush the adversary of our souls and take away the authority that he stole from Adam & Eve. No human could do this so the Father sent His Word that became flesh and walked this earth (John 1), Jesus the Christ. 2Corinthians 5:21 Amp. says, “For our sake He made Christ(virtually) to be sin Who knew no sin, so that in & through Him we might become (endued with, viewed as in and examples of) the righteousness of God – what we ought to be, approved and acceptable and in right relationship with Him, by His goodness.” Whew…the Eternal Father spoke His Eternal Word (Truth) to become His only begotten Son, our Messiah, who now rules with the Father Eternally and now we have Holy Spirit in us speaking only of the Eternal Father/God and of Jesus the Word. I would never say I understand the Trinity but in sharing God’s Word it was just laid out for us (in part).
As John 10: 10 says, we have an adversary ( father of lies – John 8:44) who steals from us, and has literally set out to kill & destroy us in the process…BUT…Jesus said that He came that we might have and enjoy life abundantly, that is to the fullest. John 16: 33 He says we will have tribulations but He has spoken so that in Him we will find peace and be of good cheer for He has overcome the world. What He has spoken is the Truth that liberates us from the bondage of whatever lies we’ve learned. Romans 8 says that our God is for us. This is an every day thing ….He’s the same today as He was yesterday and will be the same tomorrow (Heb.13:8). This means that His Love is not just for “getting saved” but for the whole journey and even beyond as it is Eternal. He will never leave us nor forsake us (Matt.28: 20).
The worlds’ best love is still temporal and we can see that in many cases it doesn’t even last this life time. But when the human meets the God Love this love can become a part of him/her. Just as Jesus abided in the Father (John 15), we abide in Him and by His Grace & Mercy we are supernaturally abilitized to give and receive Love. The adversary of our soul has counterfeited love in this world which means there is a real thing and God’s agape is it. Phileo at best is Humanism. Self gets the glory, but when God directs, we can do above and beyond our own ability. God gets the glory and we/others get the blessings. Eros is the romantic, emotional, and physical side of love that this world has corrupted beyond recognition. It was never meant to be demeaning, fearful or perverted in any way. It is God’s gift for the married man and woman to share with each other. Something to be enjoyed, not to exploit or have power over someone.
The original Valentine was given in the positive kind of love. So whether you are married or single you can enjoy the most positive Love of all not only on February 14th but Eternally!!!
