Christmas Message
Blessings at Christmas
“‘Tis the season to be jolly, fa..la..la..la..la..la..la..la..la” is what the world for the most part thinks of the “Holiday’s” . By the time you get through the shopping crowds and go to all the Christmas parties and gatherings, you get to stay home and read your mail and how you over spent again this year, it kind of takes the jolly out of it. Does it sound like a baa-humbug speaking? Well, I’m not…really! I just think it’s joy and not jolly. Let me show you what I mean.
In Matthew’s second chapter we find the story of the three wise men. It says in vs.10 that “when they saw the star they rejoiced with exceeding great joy”. They had studied the stars and knew that when this particular star (“his star”) appeared in the East that it meant that the King of the Jews had been born. They mistakenly told Herod about it and he sent them on to find this king. So, they continued to follow this star til it stopped right over the manger where He lay. Scripture says they “rejoiced with exceeding great joy”. The definition of joy itself is exceeding/greatly gladness, rejoicing, calm, delight, well off in the Greek and that plus triumph, shouts of gladness, singing and proclamation in the Hebrew.
These wise men were bursting with joy because they knew that this meant the greatest King of all had been born. Their joy was made up of the calm assurance of knowing they would be well off now. This caused them to rejoice – they got happy – you know shouting, getting excited over the thought of the birth of a child who would grow up to be the greatest King ever! Likewise in Luke’s gospel the angel declared to the shepherds abiding in the field, “behold I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people”. The news was so joyful that suddenly a whole host of angels appeared and were singing triumphantly; proclaiming “ Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace and good will to all men”!
So you see, this is no folly-jolly, this is a joyous season. It was the Father’s joy to send Jesus pay the price for our redemption (Ish.53) and Jesus’ joy to pay it (Heb.12). When Jesus is the real reason for the season we have HIS JOY. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year in the Joy of the Lord!!!
